The Walk to Defeat ALS® is The ALS Association’s biggest annual event, which raises funds that allow our local chapters to sustain care services and support research for much of the next year.

This is the second year for the University of Pittsburgh Brain Institute team although members of our team have been "Walking Because We Can" for the past 11 years in support of the mission of the ALS Association.  We are committed to making a difference in the lives of those affected by ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).  We also hope to increase awareness and support the efforts across the world aimed at improving treatment options and finding a cure.  We believe research and scientific study are critical to solving the "ALS puzzle" but are also devoted to helping patients living with ALS now.

Why We Need Your Help

ALS is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe.  The life expectancy of an ALS patient averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis.  It is often referred to as an "orphan disease" because every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle with this disease.  Unfortunately, there are no ALS survivors.  This disease occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries.

ALS can strike anyone.  Presently there is no known cause of the disease yet it still costs loved ones an average of $200,000/year to provide the care that patients with ALS need.  Help make a difference in the lives of these patients and families by donating or joining our team!
